State What This Fight Can Decide
What does this fight decide: a place, an object, time for a companion, or pride? Do not promise defeating an opponent, commit victory, then claim the player never won. Another problem can continue while this result is acknowledged.
NovelToGame connects actions to state and subsequent choices, with characters responding to actual conduct. This page concerns aftermath reads, not a universal combat balance template or compulsory combat in adaptations without it.
Read Committed Facts in the Aftermath
| Fact | Later use |
|---|---|
| Outcome and objective | Places, routes, or eligibility opened by the actual result. |
| Player conduct | Protected people, commitments, objects, or revealed information. |
| Resources and possession | Actual reward delivery and retained costs. |
| Witnesses | Who saw it and who must learn afterward. |
Branches can meet in one scene with history-specific dialogue, objects, and actions. A victory label is not all rewards delivered; praise is not every relationship repaired.
Original Aftermath Paths: A Place Won or a Different Role
Original martial-arts club game: the player and Gu Ping contest one public demonstration place. Visible rules give one point per valid score, end at two points, or compare scores after at most three rounds; a tie awards neither person the place this time. In this example, a successful response to an attack scores for the player; an error scores for Gu; a round without a valid score adds nothing. This is the example’s rule, not a universal contest rule. Both previously agreed to do their assigned display-stand preparation regardless of who demonstrates.
These paper paths start independently from the same state. A chooses two valid responses and commits 2–0; B makes two response errors and commits 0–2. Movement, collision, and real controls are not simulated here; the focus is aftermath use of the chosen outcomes.
| Path | Aftermath arrangement |
|---|---|
| A: Player wins | The referee confirms the place and actually hands over the unique demonstration token; the player holds it. Gu holds no duplicate. He undertakes his assigned stand work, congratulates the player, but keeps his independent practice today. |
| B: Gu wins | The referee gives Gu the token; the player has none. The player does their assigned stand work, and Gu keeps his preparation commitment too. Dialogue acknowledges this loss without declaring every future chance closed. |
Both can reach the preparation room. A reads the player’s token/place and offers preparation for demonstration. B reads Gu’s token; the player continues stand work without an unearned demonstration action. Record actual completion of each assigned task rather than asserting everything ready.
A preserves victory and Gu’s own plans; B loses the place without cancelling the rest of life. Repeated reward collection cannot duplicate the unique token, and convergence cannot borrow another branch’s outcome. This unbuilt paper plan verifies no combat enjoyment or runtime state.
Clarify Agency When the Source Fixes an Outcome
If the source fixes loss of a position, a playable objective may concern evidence, a companion, or withdrawal. Those results need genuine differences and later reads. Do not still promise winning the position while rewriting every strategy as the same defeat.
If the chosen adaptation permits changed outcomes, provide corresponding consequences rather than unconditionally restoring the novel. Keeping the source result is an upstream choice; aftermath dialogue cannot silently alter that boundary.
Check Outcome, Reward, Character, and Next Action
Trace initial state through resolution into the shared aftermath, checking actual outcome, objects, resources, witnesses, and actions. Use a neighboring result to expose contamination; ties, retreats, or distinct objective states follow this game’s rules too.
Deliver rewards once and retain event history. A changed label is not changed state. After building, inspect actual commits and feedback; character appeal and combat enjoyment need playtest evidence beyond aligned results.
FAQ
Can difficulties continue after victory?
Yes. Acknowledge the victory and its earned result while other established problems continue. Do not erase this win or make it solve unrelated conflicts.
Can a fixed defeat still support choices?
Yes, with a clear playable objective and real consequences for people, objects, or withdrawal. Do not promise outcome agency and erase it unconditionally in a cutscene.
Do it with the skill
Give game-world-design the source limits, chosen objective, outcome rules, and aftermath. Check actions, replies, and objects for each result, preserving committed player conduct. Repair disconnected reads without redesigning the combat system or claiming a paper branch is playtested.
