Separate understanding and production scope
NovelToGame’s source analysis requires a declared version, boundaries and coverage. An opening sample cannot represent whole-book understanding. An explicitly limited volume requires full analysis of that declared portion.
Production can start with a small section. Knowing the ending and counterexamples prevents opening-only abilities or relationships becoming false universal rules; it does not require producing the whole novel.
Original example: the invented Station Night Keeper spans seasons of repairs and passenger commissions. The first game covers one night before closure, while preserving the tension that accepting a task does not immediately complete it and people respond to unfinished promises.
Select by actions and payoff
| Source material | Game treatment | Preserve |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated commissions | A few comparable tasks | Deadlines, authority and distinct needs |
| Long station history | Reveal when it affects choice | Ownership and access facts |
| Facility repairs | Inspect, arrange and verify | Tool limits and visible results |
| Major farewell | Representative outcome | How earlier player action affects it |
| Side journeys | Defer production | Necessary links to central promises |
Check source facts and boundaries when combining events. Label invented rules as design space rather than claiming the novel already contains a complete management system.
Keep repeated participation in the smaller scope
A reduced version containing three text screens, a paid gate and an ending gives players little involvement. Preserve a loop of reading, questioning, comparing, arranging and receiving responses, with different methods changing causes and outcomes.
One night can use fewer locations while still letting players perform core actions and see consequences. Reduce routes and art instead of turning every decision into a fixed cutscene. Central emotion should enter action objects, conditions or world feedback.
Faithfulness does not require an open world, and every supporting character need not have a route. Choose a scope that tests the largest design risk with available time and assets.
Check whether cuts remove volume or meaning
After a cut, ask whether the next choice remains understandable, promises still have write/read points and defining rules remain in core actions. If so, remove the scene. If only proper nouns remain, the adaptation has lost its identity.
Separate immutable, adaptable, open and conflicting facts, with important decisions traceable to source locations. If scope changes the player promise, revise the concept before building instead of silently switching direction during production.
A first version is complete when it actually launches, accepts input, closes the core loop, delivers a result and restarts. That does not mean the whole book is adapted or commercial success is proven.
FAQ
Must a single-volume adaptation analyze the whole book?
An explicitly limited volume can be analyzed within its complete declared range. Add cross-volume evidence when rules or later outcomes affect the decision, without claiming full-book coverage.
Do it with the skill
Ask game-concept to choose production scope from verified source facts, preserving core actions and world responses while identifying deferred content and immutable facts.
