From outline to chapter: turn plot specifications into visible change
Source checked 2026-09-12 ·
Treat a chapter outline as a specification for what must change, not as prose waiting to be expanded field by field. Convert its goal, obstacle, evidence, choice, cost and ending into actions the viewpoint character can perceive. The chapter may interleave beats that share a time and place, but it must preserve approved facts and release boundaries. The original library example below is an original editorial design with facts fixed for this walkthrough, not a recorded Oh Story run or a claim about model quality.
Before you start ·
- Use a project and manuscript you own or are authorized to edit. Mark established facts, author-approved additions, unresolved questions and information that must not be revealed yet.
- Choose one chapter and state its job in before-and-after terms: what the viewpoint character wants, what blocks them, and which risk, information, relationship, resource, decision or action is different at the end.
- If this book was imported, review its reconstructed plan first with the import and continuation guide. For cross-chapter knowledge and tracking boundaries, use long-novel continuity.
Steps ·
- Write the state change before expanding beats Replace labels such as ‘conflict intensifies’ with a testable transition. State who wants what, the initial relationship or resource position, and the different position at the end. A chapter can be quiet: conditional trust, a completed handoff or one clarified responsibility may be enough if it changes the story and leaves a reason to continue.
- Turn outline fields into visible carriers Map the goal to an attempted action, the obstacle to a person, rule, space, clock or missing proof, and information to something actually seen, heard or checked. Map a relationship change to a refusal, condition, concession or handoff. Summary is useful for transitions; the problem is compressing the chapter's decisive choice and consequence into labels. Do not create one paragraph for every field or repeat the outline's wording four times because the same requirement appears in several sections.
- Make evidence change the next action Do not let narration simply announce that the protagonist understands. Show which receipt, waterline, message, object or response alters the available options. Dialogue earns its place when it changes information, strategy, power, relationship or the next move; it need not be added to satisfy a quota.
- Give the choice an owned cost Name the options the character can actually take, the evidence supporting each, who pays, and who receives any benefit. The cost can be time, responsibility, trust or an exposed resource; it need not be a catastrophe. Keep unknown motives unknown, and do not invent a betrayal merely to make the beat louder.
- End on a changed situation, not a summary Resolve one promised change and leave a concrete next problem through an action, object, line of dialogue or image. High-pressure and revelation chapters may need stronger setup and reactions. A low-pressure relationship chapter can end with a weaker hook or a stage goal; do not impose a twist, climax or confrontation on every chapter.
- Request planning only and protect approved history Say ‘outline only; no prose’ and name the exact chapter or new range. If the request touches an already locked outline or unit, the author must explicitly authorize the affected scope; otherwise list the impact and stop. Keep unplayed future plans in the outline. Do not silently write them into continuity tracking or revise completed chapters.

Original editorial example with facts fixed for this walkthrough — Moving the Archive Before the Storm (not tool output)
Facts fixed for this example: Lu Yao and Cen An must move library materials before a storm. Only one cart is usable, and there is time for only one lower-risk trip before the rain intensifies; further trips remain possible at greater risk. The two candidate loads are unique local oral-history notebooks on low shelves and replaceable school readers on loan beside a leaking window. A reversed floor drain threatens the notebooks; the readers are due back Monday. Lu Yao may choose the notebooks first, but must sign responsibility for possible damage to the school books. Do not invent sabotage, a secret message or proof that either character predicted the storm.
Before — a restatement outline:
‘The storm approaches. Lu Yao and Cen An disagree over which books to move. Lu Yao chooses the oral histories, pays a price, and leaves a problem for the next chapter.’
This names goal, conflict, choice, cost and hook without showing how evidence changes a decision.
After — a scene-level chapter outline, still not prose:
- Before state: both collections are exposed; Lu Yao and Cen An disagree, and no one owns the damage decision.
- Goal/choice: decide which load receives the first, lower-risk trip; the other can still be moved later under greater risk.
- Beat 1: Cen An rolls the cart to the school readers and shows the Monday return sheet; the external obligation becomes visible.
- Beat 2: Lu Yao checks the floor drain, sees water pushing back toward the low shelves, and verifies the ‘sole original’ accession marks on the notebooks. Evidence changes the priority; nobody merely declares the answer.
- Beat 3: Lu Yao chooses the notebooks and signs the incident form for any loss to the readers. The choice buys preservation of unique records while assigning a concrete cost.
- Beat 4: Cen An stops blocking the cart and takes its rear handle. Their relationship changes from opposition to conditional cooperation, not instant agreement.
- Ending change: the first trip ends with the notebooks upstairs, while the readers remain below the leak and may still be moved next. Cen An hands Lu Yao the signed form and says the school will inspect the crates Monday. The saved resource, exposed resource and next responsibility are all visible.
A quieter version could end when Cen An conditionally yields the cart and joins the move; that relationship shift can carry the chapter without adding a broken window, accusation or surprise villain.
Copyable planning-only request for story-long-write in your configured agent host:
Revise only the unlocked chapter 12 outline; do not write prose. My authorization covers this chapter only. Preserve established events, character knowledge and unrevealed information. Do not change other outlines, completed chapters or tracking.
Replace summary labels with a goal, obstacle, observable evidence, a choice with an owned cost, and a concrete ending change. Keep the storm, one usable cart, the two material categories and the Monday return obligation. Do not add sabotage or a hidden culprit.
If chapter 12 is locked, or the revision would alter a locked plot unit, return a change proposal without modifying locked content. Keep future plans in the outline rather than recording them as events that already happened.
Return the revised outline (or the proposal if locked) and unresolved questions, then stop.
Expected files ·
- One bounded chapter outline whose approved facts, release limits, goal, obstacle, evidence, choice, cost, relationship/resource change and ending handoff can guide later prose.
- A short unresolved-questions list instead of invented motives, evidence or future events. Planning-only work should stop before prose.
- An impact note when the requested change reaches locked planning or completed chapters. No tracking change is implied by drafting a future outline.
Verify the result ·
- For every beat, point to the visible carrier and the state it changes. If deleting a paragraph leaves the goal, evidence, choice and outcome unchanged, that paragraph may only be restating the outline.
- Check causality: the evidence must exist before it changes the choice; the cost must belong to someone; the ending must follow from the approved action rather than an unapproved twist.
- Check scope: no prose was written, locked material was not changed without explicit authorization, and future plans were not recorded as completed continuity facts. For wording-level revision after drafting, use the prose revision guide.
