Distinguish the local problem from the whole-book objective
Oh Story’s genre catalog gives infinite-flow fiction a core structure: each scenario tells its own story, while a real-world line connects them. Its structural reference adds alternation between those lines. This article concerns connection; rules horror covers local rules and dead ends.
Original premise: Li An’s sister is trapped in a shut-down transfer station. He enters different scenarios to find a way to restore it.
| Layer | Problem | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Unlit hotel scenario | Find a duty procedure that keeps the exit open | A companion escapes; Li brings back a lamp core with one charge |
| Real-world line | Can the core restore the station? | It lights a map revealing his sister’s isolated section |
| Sealed train scenario | Obtain a switching key and choose which carriage to rescue | The key is gained; a rescued passenger knows another part of the station’s history |
The whole-book objective needs more than a repeated reminder that he wants to save his sister. Maps, tools and witnesses must change the next route and judgment.
Give each scenario a complete local story
Do not reduce the hotel to entry, key and exit. Establish its entry condition, local objective, resistance, choice and settlement:
Entry: Li has an old map and a companion who distrusts him.
Objective: Restore the exit light before the shift change seals the corridor.
Resistance: The only core is in maintenance; his companion wants to rescue trapped guests first. Their information differs.
Choice: Li gives the map to the companion and repairs the light himself, sacrificing sole access to the evidence.
Settlement: Guests escape and the exit opens. The companion brings part of the duty record; a limited partnership forms.
Larger mysteries can remain, but settle the local promise. Show the exit’s state, the guests’ outcome and tools spent instead of substituting “mission complete.”
The source’s twenty-to-thirty-chapter scenario length is a planning reference, not a requirement. Divide according to necessary attempts and consequences; do not pad a short arc or force-cut a complex one.
Make the return handle what came back
Weak transition: Li completes the scenario, receives a core and is transported to the next train.
Connected transition: Li inserts the core at the station. The map lights for an instant, revealing no link to his sister’s section. The duty record contains an old train-switching number. After comparing the two, they choose the train scenario to find a key that can reconnect the sections.
The return pays off a gain, exposes a specific remaining problem and motivates the next entry. The real-world passage can be short, but it must do more than show a reward screen.
Keep a small record of gains, expenditure, knowledge and relationship changes. A one-charge core cannot become an unlimited battery without explanation; a former collaborator cannot restart as a stranger every time.
Vary the decision rather than merely the scenery
| Repetition | Revision |
|---|---|
| Every scenario finds a key for a door | Change the objective: identify a witness, coordinate evacuation, repair a device or forgo a gain |
| Rewards never matter | Use existing gains in real-world action; merge or remove purposeless rewards |
| The real-world objective stalls | Each return should alter a route, judgment or relationship |
| New scenarios only have fiercer monsters | Change information, cooperation and decisions, not just danger values |
| All states reset at the exit | Carry injuries, expenditure, facts and promises forward |
Not every scenario must reveal a major piece of the central mystery. One may establish a companion, another spend a resource, another supply a tool. The author should still identify the changed conditions for whole-book progress.
FAQ
Must infinite-flow fiction have a real-world line?
This article uses the skill’s real-world connector. A story remaining inside the scenario world still needs ongoing goals and consequences to perform that function.
Will ordinary life between scenarios slow the story?
It may if it only provides rest and rewards. Handling tools, relationships and the next choice is progress. Keep it as short as the material requires.
Do it with the skill
Ask story-long-write to connect three scenarios: local problem, settlement, returned result, real-world change and reason for the next entry. Use settled tools and rules without imposing a fixed chapter count.
