Separate ambience, effects and score
Ambience keeps a space present: ventilation, distant rain or street background. A book landing or latch clicking is an event effect tied to action. Audience-only music is another layer.
Same-scene continuity is a default, not identical waveforms. Distance, doors, a machine starting or intended silence can change sound. Check script and sound intent before smoothing a deliberate change. Background with no story role need not become an exhaustive inventory.
Check location and reason for change
Fill this manual comparison from the joined material:
| Point | Sound and cause |
|---|---|
| Before | Sound: Main ambience and sense of distance; Reason: Doors, sources and positions |
| After | Sound: What continues, enters or leaves; Reason: New framing, place or distance |
| Join | Sound: First audible problem; Reason: Intended change or a material seam |
Do not review only individual files. Each can sound plausible while the join jumps in noise or reverberation. Mark the time and audible change before choosing a layer to repair; “unnatural” is too vague for replacement work.
Original example: a library return slot
This sound design has not been generated or auditioned. Ventilation runs in the reading room, rain is distant, and established corridor conversation is faint through the closed door.
| Shot | Image and sound |
|---|---|
| A01 | Image: Librarian brings a book to the return slot; Sound: Fan and rain continue; door distances voices |
| A02 | Image: Book slides into the box; Sound: Same room ambience; landing sound follows action |
| A03 | Image: Door opens, view turns to corridor; Sound: Voices become clearer; reading-room sound recedes |
A02 does not acquire a new machine sound because it is a different file. The book impact does not loop into new room tone. A03 has a door and view change, so it need not match A01’s level.
If A01→A02 suddenly sounds like a hall, inspect the actual clips: changed ambience, reverberation or added music? Repair according to the accepted plan. Choose additional ambience from available project sounds rather than inventing a broadcast or new person.
Write connected sound briefs for all three shots
Keep the library example above. These are connected sound briefs for storyboard and video prompts, not mixing commands. Each shot’s accepted storyboard still owns its visible action. No footage has been generated, auditioned or accepted at the joins.
A01: The librarian carries the same book to the reading-room return slot and still holds it at the end. Ventilation and distant outdoor rain continue throughout. Established corridor voices sound far away behind the closed door. Retain necessary footsteps without adding a broadcast, dialogue or score. Carry this room perspective into A02.
A02: Start with that book still held. The librarian feeds it into the slot, releases it and it lands in the box. Its impact follows actual contact, not the moment before release, and does not loop. Fan, rain and muffled corridor voices continue with A01’s spatial character and relative levels. A close-up does not become a different hall. End with the book inside, so the next shot does not return it again.
A03: The book remains inside the box. The librarian opens the previously closed door. Existing corridor voices become clearer as it opens; as the accepted view turns toward the corridor, reading-room ventilation and rain recede. Let door and view cause the change rather than deleting room tone at the cut. Add no new speakers, intelligible new lines or score.
Listen across A01’s end and A02’s start, then A02’s end and A03’s start. The first cut should retain the room. At the second, check continuity while the door is closed before evaluating the change as it opens. The book lands once; repeated impacts are not a repair for a seam.
If A02 actually carries larger hall reverberation, identify whether it is embedded in the source or comes from a separate ambience track. A separate track can be treated according to the plan. Embedded sound cannot be removed by a note in the edit list. Adding a new bed over the old one does not establish a unified space either. After replacement, new material or external processing, listen to the real output. These briefs establish connected intent only.
Treat the join, then listen to the sequence
Compare a continuous ambience bed, crossfade or retained audio over a different image according to scene needs. Noise mixed with speech is not automatically separable; request material when necessary information cannot be preserved.
This version’s render retains source audio. Writing “ambience continues” does not execute a crossfade or mute. After external treatment, record spans, files and actual output. Listen across both sides and the sequence, preserving speech and meaningful silence. Overall level normalization does not replace this review.
The main guide covers sound and silence as story choices. See score continuity for music restarts.
FAQ
Must same-scene ambience be identical?
No. Distance, doors, view or intended silence can change sound. Check the reason and story information rather than forcing equal levels.
Do it with the skill
Use $short-drama-edit to audition existing adjacent clips. Record recurring ambience, location/view, triggering changes and first audible problem. Separate ambience, event effects and score. Compare seam treatment and replacement footage, recording actual external output before reviewing the sequence.
