Five checks for an episode
| Check | Question |
|---|---|
| Entry | Which positions, knowledge, held objects, relationships, and started actions matter here? |
| Goal and pressure | What changes does the character want, and what limits them? Quiet waiting can carry pressure |
| Action and response | How does a step change the conditions for the next? Opposition can have a reasonable goal |
| Local payoff | What result, understanding, relationship, or feeling has landed? This need not solve everything |
| Exit | Who knows and holds what? What occurred and what remains? How does a continuation inherit it? |
These are checks rather than a scene count or compulsory beat pattern. The season outline distributes the larger story; this page checks one episode’s promised experience. An episode may finish on a complete emotional landing without a sudden new accident.
Use “therefore” and “but” to inspect causality
For action scenes, connect the beats: “Because of that result, the character does this; but the response changes the conditions; therefore the character changes approach or faces the outcome.” If only “then” fits, inspect why these events belong together rather than inventing an obstacle for the formula.
The removal test should include knowledge, relationships, action, emotional accumulation, rhythm, and viewing experience. Consider combining an episode when you cannot identify a loss. Silence, comic repetition, and atmosphere can contribute; task completion alone does not define an episode’s value.
Original example: the last rehearsal before clearing the room
Fictional agreement: A community troupe has the activity room until eight that evening, after which an exhibition team enters. Qiao Ning can organize moving the troupe’s props but cannot extend the booking. Administrator Shen Yue handles handover and cannot postpone the exhibition himself. Both know this from the opening. The troupe’s own trolley is already outside, so moving equipment does not depend on a surprise rescue.
Write the same plan as screenplay: after an extension is refused, a prop-free attempt and moving run alongside each other, followed by the agreed handover. The rehearsal uses its established lines. “Later” allows elapsed time; production should schedule the actual passage and moving load.
INT. COMMUNITY ACTIVITY ROOM — NIGHT
Qiao Ning steadies a prop box. The newcomer waits at the entrance position. Shen Yue places the confirmed installation schedule before Qiao.
QIAO: Half an hour more? She hasn’t tried this passage all the way through.
SHEN: The installation team enters at eight. The room must be empty. I can’t change their arrangement.
Qiao looks toward the trolley already outside, then back to the newcomer.
QIAO: Try the blocking and response without props. We’ll move them now and clear the room before eight.
SHEN: All right. I’ll inspect it at the agreed time.
The newcomer enters, passes the point where she previously stalled and gives the rehearsal response. Qiao and a troupe member lift the box onto the trolley and push it outside. Qiao returns to the doorway as the newcomer delivers the passage’s last line and reaches its ending position.
QIAO: The entrance and response connected. It still needs work before a public performance.
Later, before the eight o’clock handover. The troupe removes its remaining belongings. Shen enters, checks that no props remain and steps aside for the installation team at the door.
SHEN: Handover complete. You can come in.
The team brings in its belongings. Qiao leaves the troupe trolley outside and finds the previously established school-hall contact on her phone. Her availability question has not been sent.
The episode delivers one complete attempt and clearing the room as agreed. It gains neither an extension nor another venue. Props are outside and the installation team occupies the room; Qiao prepares to ask about the school hall. Next episode should show contact and response before choosing another rehearsal location. Planning to ask is not having secured it.
Repair an Episode That Feels Disconnected
| Symptom | Repair |
|---|---|
| The opening incident has nothing to do with the goal | Enter through pressure that is already taking effect |
| Scenes can be reordered arbitrarily | Make the result of one scene change the conditions of the next |
| Every answer is postponed until the next episode | Give this episode a partial result |
| The ending introduces an unrelated accident out of nowhere | Grow the new pressure from this episode’s victory, cost or newly acquired knowledge |
| Two episodes leave the same state | Merge them, or give one a distinct step forward |
Fill the episode card with the same case
This is an editorial worksheet, not five extra scenes or an output claimed from running the skill.
| Card | Case |
|---|---|
| Entry | Eight o’clock handover agreed; props and newcomer inside; trolley outside |
| Goal and limit | Complete a full attempt; no unilateral extension; room must be cleared |
| Changed approach | After refusal, combine a prop-free run with moving equipment; inspection stays at the agreed time |
| Result | Newcomer finishes, props leave, administrator inspects, exhibition team enters |
| Continuation | No replacement venue yet; Qiao Ning prepares to ask the established school contact |
Cutting to black at the refusal would not fulfill this episode’s promised rehearsal. If a different work promises a relationship change caused by refusal, deliver that change instead of forcing success.
FAQ
Does this method require a fixed runtime or episode count?
No. First make the goal, countermove, change of direction and result work. Then adjust the amount of material to the length and production conditions already agreed for the project.
Can I use the table as it is?
Use the table to find gaps. The script still needs actions the characters can perform, dialogue and consequences. Do not force an entry into a field you do not need.
Do it with the skill
In Claude Code, say: “Use /short-drama-develop to work on my micro-drama using this article’s method. Preserve the established facts and do not add a fixed episode count or platform rules.” In Codex, use the corresponding skill.
