A character card should predict choices

Drama Skills records pursuit, protected value, belief, history, strategy, cost and conditions for change. Use what the story needs; extras do not require full biographies.

Original character: shop owner Qiao Yin quietly fixes employees’ handover errors. She wants to preserve the team and fears appearing uncaring.

QuestionEntry
Immediate pursuitOpen on time without losing customers to handover mistakes
Protected valueStaff trust and her identity as dependable
BeliefKeeping problems private keeps the team together
Prior basisPublic blame once caused coworkers to accuse each other
Habitual strategyFill gaps herself, explain for others, delay questions
Current costStaff repeat mistakes they never learn about; her workload grows
Change conditionConcealment affects another employee’s pay record

The card predicts her first repair and identifies pressure that can expose the strategy’s limits.

Character development also asks why viewers will follow. Qiao shoulders opening and corrections because she wants to keep a group together; Cheng’s concrete missing hours show whom that protection hurts. Followability requires neither charm nor constant correctness. Visible wants, ability, and mistakes do more than a list of virtues.

Translate relationship tension into competing requests

When Qiao meets handover worker A Cheng, “kind owner, impulsive employee” is insufficient.

Qiao wants him to open first and check later, hiding her altered records.

Cheng wants recorded hours checked now, preventing another absence charged to him.

Qiao invokes opening time; Cheng produces an approved schedule photo.

Both have aims and leverage. Cheng does not become angry merely to trigger her growth; Qiao does not suddenly become malicious.

Make the exchange playable: she closes the sheet and goes to lift the shutter; he puts the photograph by the register and leaves the keys untouched. Viewers see the conflict without two biographies.

Establish yesterday’s materials: Cheng’s confirmed schedule is 07:00–11:00, with both 07:00 and 11:00 in attendance records, while the pay preview uses 10:00–11:00. When filling a different handover entry, Qiao previously put 10:00 in his row by mistake. The schedule establishes the plan; attendance supports actual endpoints. Compare both rather than treating a schedule photo as complete attendance proof.

Show change through a pressure test

This scene need not complete her entire growth toward openness. She can first stop silently fixing the sheet and retain it for comparison, still limiting the meeting to those involved because she fears public embarrassment.

Track the chain: concealment meets pressure on another person’s hours; she retains the original record; comparison exposes a handover gap; she admits an alteration. The next episode addresses whether to tell all staff.

She may also conceal again, opening on time but losing Cheng’s trust. A refusal to change is a valid route when consequences follow. Do not make every complex character morally correct to satisfy a growth requirement.

Reveal history when action requires it. If Cheng asks why she prevents group checking, one relevant prior event can answer without an opening life story.

Original Scene: Keeping the Sheet Is a First Change

Shop, before opening. Qiao Yin closes the pay preview and offers Cheng the key.

Qiao: “Open first. I’ll fix that row later. Don’t embarrass everyone.”

Cheng leaves the key and sets yesterday’s schedule photo beside the till.

Cheng: “I’m not asking you to fill it in for me. Seven to eleven—how did it become one hour?”

She looks toward the shutter, then reopens the preview. Her pen stops before crossing out the old number.

Qiao: “I wrote ten. I was filling someone else’s handover and put it in your row.”

Cheng: “Keep that row. Let’s check attendance together.”

They match yesterday’s attendance endpoints against date and name on the schedule: 07:00 and 11:00, four hours rather than the preview’s one. Qiao retains the original, marks the correction’s basis, changes this pending row to four hours, and shows him.

Qiao: “This one follows what we checked. I can’t finish everyone else’s sheets alone and call it done. But for now, only the people involved. I still don’t want to expose anyone to the whole staff.”

Cheng: “This entry is right. I’ll open; we’ll check the others later. Ask before changing my record.”

She nods. He takes the key and opens the shutter. She leaves the original and correction evidence on the counter instead of hiding them in a drawer.

Concealment has become joint checking, and his entry is actually revised. Pay still awaits aggregation and payment; other records remain unchecked. Qiao still fears public embarrassment. This is a trial of a new strategy rather than instant removal of every blind spot. Cheng keeps his own terms instead of announcing that his boss has completed her growth.

A card is not a fixed answer sheet. If a scene reveals a better motive, revise the notes and check the compatibility of existing action and affected later episodes.

FAQ

Must the character grow in every episode?

No. Episodes can advance external goals, accumulate pressure or reinforce an old strategy. A claimed change needs a corresponding choice and consequence.

Must all backstory appear in episode one?

No. The author knows the relevant history; viewers receive only what they need for the present action.
