AI character profiles feel flat? Turn motives into story choices
Source checked 2026-09-13 ·
A detailed character profile does not yet explain why someone acts. Give the character a concrete goal, a reason it matters to them, an obstacle and something they could lose; then show how their usual way of solving problems shapes a choice. Oh Story’s character references distinguish goals from motives and connect motivation to cause, intention, constraint and risk. The original fantasy-courier example below turns “proud but responsible” into a sequence of decisions. It is an editorial planning exercise, not a generated story or a requirement that every character needs trauma, a hidden secret or a growth arc.
Before you start ·
- One character, a specific situation and the facts you have already approved. For an existing manuscript, bring the relevant scene and character notes you own or are authorized to use; do not replace established history with a fresh profile.
- Decide whether you want alternatives in chat, a saved character design or a prose revision. This exercise can stay in chat; using it in an Oh Story book project requires a configured supported host. The writer’s skill guide separates discussion, planning files and the later prose request.
Steps ·
- Separate the goal from the reason it matters “Deliver the beacon wick before dusk” is a result to pursue. “Have my route judgment recognized, rather than be seen only as someone who follows instructions” explains why this delivery matters to this character. Separate the immediate task from the longer ambition. A motive can involve care, belonging, curiosity or responsibility; it need not be revenge or a secret wound. The bundled web-fiction template favors personally meaningful motives, not a universal theory of human behavior.
- Turn a trait into a habitual tactic A useful question is not only “Is this person proud?” but “What do they do when someone offers help?” In the example, skill at reading wind has made independent route-finding a successful habit; treating every contribution as a denial of that skill is where the habit becomes a liability. If you designate something a weakness, show where it causes a mistake or narrows a useful option. Do not invent incompetence in an established strength simply to force a lesson.
- Put a real obstacle between the habit and the goal Use the situation’s approved limits. Here the direct route is closed and a viable relay exists, but taking it means giving up a solo delivery. List what each available choice preserves and gives up. A difficult choice need not threaten a life: losing time, recognition or a valued opportunity can matter. Do not add a new power, an arbitrary accident or a villain solely to make the card’s adjectives visible.
- Give the other person an independent move The relay partner also wants the beacon lit, but will not help conceal who flew which leg. She prepares the south-route wings and proposes a handoff instead of waiting to approve the protagonist’s idea. Her action creates an option and her boundary changes its terms. The character reference explicitly gives supporting and allied characters their own actions and motives; disagreement does not automatically make someone an antagonist.
- Make a change of action legible Show the offer, the first response, what the character learns or notices, and the revised choice. One new fact may justify a changed tactic without changing the underlying motive. Here recognition still matters after the courier accepts a relay; he chooses the route and accepts responsibility rather than pretending help never happened. That is more specific than declaring that he has suddenly become humble, and it does not erase the partner’s contribution.
- Choose growth or a tested conviction, not a compulsory cure A growth story needs an event and response that make the change credible. A character can also hold a considered belief while circumstances reveal its strength, limits or cost. Oh Story’s reference explicitly permits stable protagonists; it does not require every scene to improve them. For the courier below, a single relay can revise one decision without curing a lifelong habit. Do not retrofit childhood trauma to explain every preference, or mistake a new action for a new personality.
- Before fixing “out of character,” identify the actual mismatch A statement that contradicts established history, a character’s disputed claim and a changed tactic under different conditions need different editorial responses. Compare the passage with the relevant earlier scene and ask who is speaking, what that person knows and what has changed. A character can conceal or misrepresent something; that possibility does not automatically prove intentional deception or excuse a writing error. Nor does accepting help once require accepting every later offer. Oh Story’s review reference checks both unsupported motive changes and actions that conflict with characterization; the distinctions here are a reading aid, not a new automatic verdict or rubric.
- Save approved design separately from events that happened Treat proposed motives, secrets and future turning points as choices for the author. In a long-form project, static design belongs in
设定/角色/{角色名}.md; chapter-current state is tracked separately. A planned acceptance of help is not a completed event. Preserve existing decisions, identify the affected outline range and use outline to chapter for the next planning step. When the problem is already-written behavior, use the review-to-revision guide to agree on scope before rewriting.
Example · 示例
Original planning example — The South-Route Relay. Written for this guide, not an Oh Story run or a complete scene.
Approved fictional facts:
Ali is an apprentice glider courier, good at reading wind. He wants his route judgment recognized and often treats assistance as evidence that others do not trust it. He has volunteered to deliver a new wick to the ridge beacon before dusk. The north route is closed today; no one may fly it. The south route is open. Ali alone cannot complete it before dusk, but a two-person relay can. Nanzhi can take the first leg while Ali uses a separate launch point for the second. Both know these conditions; no hidden weather discovery is needed. If they defer until morning, the beacon will stay unlit tonight. No additional disaster is established.
Nanzhi's position:
She wants the beacon working and wants the relay honestly acknowledged. She has prepared the south-route wings and proposes the handoff. She will fly her leg, but will not pretend Ali delivered the whole route alone. The story has not promised a promotion for either of them.
A profile that has not yet become a plot:
“Ali is proud but responsible. When the north route closes, he understands the value of teamwork, accepts help and grows.”
This skips his resistance and the decision; adding another paragraph of biography would not supply them.
One possible sequence, not an approved new chapter:
1. Nanzhi lays out the two departure points and offers the first leg. Ali asks whether the relay can still be called his solo delivery. His concern becomes observable rather than merely labeled “pride.”
2. She refuses to hide her contribution. The route remains available; what is unavailable is both using her help and claiming he worked alone.
3. Ali looks again at the wick and the two prepared wings. No new secret arrives. He has to choose between tonight's delivery with shared credit and preserving the hope of a later solo delivery while leaving the beacon dark tonight.
4. He asks Nanzhi to take the first leg, chooses the agreed second-leg launch point and says he will describe the relay as a relay. He has not stopped wanting recognition; he accepts that today's sound route judgment includes someone else's work.
5. End the planning beat with the handoff agreed and both preparing to depart. Delivery has not happened yet. A later scene must establish arrival before the beacon can be recorded as lit.
What this version does not claim:
Ali is not now humble forever; Nanzhi has not forgiven an invented earlier betrayal; teamwork does not guarantee promotion. The north route does not become safe through courage. If you want a different outcome, change the design explicitly instead of smuggling it into a character card.
Three different continuity questions — independent hypothetical review exercises, not new events in the planned relay above:
For these exercises only, suppose the author has actually written Ali agreeing to the relay and acknowledging Nanzhi's part. This premise does not establish that either flight or delivery has happened.
1. A factual contradiction:
A later passage, explicitly using reliable neutral narration, says: “Ali had never agreed to share a task with anyone.” That conflicts with the written agreement. Correct or qualify the line within the authorized edit scope; do not erase the earlier agreement or invent amnesia to defend it. If the book intentionally uses unreliable narration, establish that separate design and its textual signals before treating this as the same case.
2. A line whose purpose is unresolved:
Ali tells another person, “I've never agreed to share a task with anyone.” The claim conflicts with the agreement, but it is now his speech. It might be bluster, deception or a draft inconsistency; the isolated line does not settle which. Ask what he wants from this listener and how the scene frames or answers the claim. Keep “Ali said X” separate from “X is true.” Do not invent a secret motive, automatically normalize the line into truthful speech or declare it successful subtext without supporting material.
3. A changed tactic, not necessarily a changed character:
For a separate later assignment, the author explicitly establishes that Ali can take an open route alone and still arrive on time. He chooses to go alone. That choice need not undo his earlier willingness to relay: the obstacle is different, while recognition and independent judgment can still matter to him. This new assignment does not reopen the north route in the earlier scene. If the intention is a deeper change in values instead, ask what events and responses support it rather than treating either solo work or cooperation as a permanent personality test.
For an existing manuscript, request the narrowest supported finding: quote the relevant passage and earlier basis, distinguish fact from interpretation, then say whether a local correction, a clearer scene transition or an author decision is needed. A finding is not authorization to rewrite the character or the later chapters.
Ordinary chat request before saving anything:
Using only the approved facts above, discuss Ali's immediate goal, personal motive, usual tactic and the choice he faces. Identify the passages that support each inference; leave missing history unknown. Keep Nanzhi's separate motive and contribution. For this comparison, keep the proposed ending where both agree to the relay; offer one alternative sequence and explain what it emphasizes differently. Do not add trauma, secret powers, a promotion or a completed delivery.
Reply here only; do not start a writing skill or create or edit files. This is a requested scope, not a guaranteed tool-access restriction.
After selecting a design, explicitly request the relevant character/outline updates. Ask for prose separately.
Expected files ·
- A concise motive-to-choice explanation grounded in approved material: what the person wants, why it matters, what they try and what changes the available choice. This is an editorial aid, not a new required Oh Story schema.
- A separate account of the supporting character’s aim, action and boundary, so the scene does not reduce them to permission for the protagonist.
- A proposed sequence with a stated outcome and unresolved author choices. Approved planning can later update the relevant long-form character card and outline; it does not by itself change the chapter-current tracking state.
- For a disputed existing passage, an evidence-based distinction between a factual conflict, unresolved speech intent and a change of tactic. State what remains uncertain and the proposed edit scope; do not silently turn an interpretation into character history.
- For the next pass, use character dialogue to give these motives different conversational actions, and long-novel continuity to preserve what each person actually knows and has done.
Verify the result ·
- Read the chosen action against the character’s information and approved history. If it still feels arbitrary, identify the missing reason or transition rather than adding a diagnostic label or an invented past.
- Ask whether a claimed weakness, change or stable conviction actually affects the scene. A filled-out profile and a finished workflow do not prove characterization quality or guarantee consistency across a novel.
- The source templates target Chinese web fiction and include optional craft methods alongside workflow instructions. This guide is a selective editorial application, not a promise of a dedicated motivation command, enforced read-only mode or universally required tragic backstory.
