钩子

hook (an opening, ending or paragraph-level reason to keep reading)

Definition

钩子 (gōu zi, 'hook') is a device at a chapter boundary or inside a paragraph that invites the reader to continue: an unanswered question, a countdown, a reversal or unfinished dialogue. In serialized web fiction, a chapter-ending hook aims to sustain interest into the next installment, including across a paywalled boundary; it does not guarantee a purchase or continued reading.
