Keep conclusions within the evidence
game-world-design separates a clue’s carrier, minimum supported conclusion and unresolved interpretation. Establish the fact before choosing the trace; art detail does not automatically supply a complete deduction.
Original greenhouse: a north irrigation sign says “Disused,” yet a tray below the joint holds water. The discrepancy invites inspection. It does not prove secret nighttime use; residual water, another leak or an obsolete sign remain possible.
New evidence narrows explanations. Seeing the joint currently drip establishes water there now. An actor or earlier time still needs records, witnesses or other relevant facts.
Separate observation, inference and action
| Carrier and observation | Supports | Unknown and next action |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh marks inside latch | Recent abrasion here | Actor and opening remain unknown: compare use and records |
| Fuse labels differ from wiring | Labels cannot directly guide operation | Editor and valid version: verify before acting |
| Drag marks by empty shelf outline | Suggests an object was moved | Mover and purpose: inspect exit and handoff records |
| Irrigation joint dripping now | Water currently present | Source and controller: trace accessible pipe |
Evidence may justify suspicion without certainty. A uniquely identifying clue needs established conditions excluding alternatives, not invisible rules added at resolution.
Let observation change available actions
Following an accessible pipe reveals another nursery using water. Players can question its manager or report the discrepancy between the sign and current dripping. They report observations, not a proved theft accusation.
A signed supply record can establish time and responsibility; an admission still needs context and evidence. Environments can carry history while text or dialogue supplies exact names, operating conditions and promises.
On return, show established changes: a closed valve, cleared water or replaced sign. Tie them to game actions or accepted events instead of unexplained resets.
Repair visibility, inference and guidance separately
Ask an uninformed tester what they observed, inferred and plan to do. Repair visibility through angle, lighting, scale and path; unsupported inference through evidence scope; missing next actions through accessible options and local guidance.
Important clues must read from the actual player view, not merely an art sheet. Decorative photographs can add atmosphere without a truth caption on every object. Provide a readable document view for exact names instead of ambiguous texture.
Match source-derived clues to the novel and label additions as adaptation choices. Recheck visibility after location or lighting changes and replay deductions after evidence changes.
FAQ
Can environmental storytelling replace dialogue?
It can carry some history and mood, but use direct text or dialogue when players need precise instructions, names, or a choice explained clearly.
Do it with the skill
Use $game-world-design to map clue carriers, observations, minimum conclusions, open explanations and next actions. Compare source facts, remove unsupported time, motive or identity claims, and inspect the actual player view.
