Common Web-Fiction Subgenres and Their Core Loops

This editorial comparison uses the skill’s methods to distinguish recurring reading experiences. It is not an official platform taxonomy or a current popularity ranking. Setting labels such as period fiction and mechanism labels such as system fiction describe different dimensions and can overlap.

TypeLoop and tradeoffs
Cautious cultivation (凡人流)Core loop: Observe risks → prepare → make trade-offs → preserve gains; Main reward: Caution and judgment defeat stronger enemies; Common failure: The protagonist claims to be cautious but always acts through reckless gambles
Scenario-based survival (无限流)Core loop: Enter a scenario → discover its rules → solve it → bring back a change; Main reward: New worlds, new problems, and progress in the long plot; Common failure: Scenarios never affect one another and feel like an anthology
Rules horrorCore loop: Observe → test → record → reuse; Main reward: Restrictions become legible and costs can be avoided; Common failure: Rules are rewritten whenever convenient
Urban high martial artsCore loop: Train → confront → obtain resources → enter a higher-tier map; Main reward: Strength and social position rise together; Common failure: A new map erases old characters and goals
High-concept or system fictionCore loop: Distinctive mechanism → problem → choice of use → cost; Main reward: New combinations built from the same mechanism; Common failure: One function leads to the same solution every time
Rebirth revengeCore loop: Use old information → rewrite a choice → diverge the timeline → compete anew; Main reward: Fate is actively rewritten; Common failure: The protagonist knows everything and opponents never learn
Period web fiction (年代文)Core loop: Practical shortage → manage resources and favors → improve daily life; Main reward: Gradually change one’s fate within constraints; Common failure: Objects accumulate while practical ledgers stand still
Groveling romanceCore loop: Harm → departure → remorse → proof and choice; Main reward: A reversal of relational power and a belated reckoning; Common failure: Suffering and apology appear without departure or proof

This table groups stories by their writing engines. A work may combine subgenres. Choose one primary loop; let other elements supply settings, characters, or variations.

What Is Mortal-Flow Fiction?

Cautious cultivation fiction (凡人流) usually gives the protagonist an ordinary or relatively weak starting point in a high-risk world. Survival depends on observation, preparation, weighing costs and benefits, and retreating in time. Satisfaction comes from judgment and preparation creating an advantage; growth in strength serves survival choices.

Caution must appear in action. The protagonist prepares an exit, calculates reward together with risk, retreats from an enemy beyond their capacity, and deals with supporting characters who have interests of their own. If every crisis begins through luck and ends through a hidden trump card, “cautious” is only a label.

How Can a New Writer Choose a Suitable Web-Fiction Subgenre?

Answer four questions first:

  1. Which choice do you most want to write repeatedly: trade-offs, puzzle solving, combat, management, or relational reckoning?
  2. Can your material support many variations?
  3. What lasting change remains after the protagonist completes each loop?
  4. Does the next expectation come from greater scale, altered rules, changing relationships, or a reversal in understanding?

A loop that keeps producing different situations is better suited to a long novel. If you love only one opening premise, test it in a short story before deciding how to extend it into a long arc.

How Can One Opening Become Several Different Subgenres?

Shared opening: Zhou Yan, an apprentice in a medicinal-herb warehouse, discovers that the labels on a shipment do not match the contents.

  • Cautious cultivation (凡人流): He does not report it immediately. First he learns who can alter the accounts, where the goods travel, and how he can leave safely, then tests the opponent’s response with a small batch.
  • Rules horror: The night-shift rules require mislabeled goods to remain sealed in place, while another rule requires expired goods to be cleared before dawn. The contradiction forces him to test the rules.
  • High-concept system fiction: He can see “the result of the next use” of each herb. The ability has limited uses and a cost for misreading, so choosing which crate deserves a use becomes central.
  • period web fiction: The labeling error affects purchasing quotas, responsibility for workstations, and guarantees among acquaintances. He must prove himself through procedures and debts of favor.

The visible problem remains mislabeled goods, but what readers keep waiting for has changed. A subgenre is defined by its long-running loop; surface decoration cannot decide it alone.

Can Subgenres Be Combined Without Scattering the Main Plot?

Yes. Write one primary promise, then state what each element contributes. A “cautious cultivation with rules horror” story may use cautious trade-offs as its primary loop while rule-bound scenarios supply changing risks. A rebirth story set in a period setting can make practical management its primary loop, while knowledge from a previous life offers only a limited advantage.

For each major section, check whether the primary loop advances, whether supporting characters and resources carry over, and whether the new element changes a choice. If removing a label leaves the main plot untouched, that label is promotional decoration. If several loops compete to provide the resolution, readers may not know what to anticipate next.

FAQ

What is the difference between a web-fiction subgenre and subject matter?

A subject describes the story world and major conflict, such as a period setting, palace intrigue, or cultivation. A subgenre emphasizes a repeated reading mechanism, such as cautious cultivation (凡人流), scenario-based survival (无限流), or system fiction. Stories often combine the two.

How many subgenres can one novel use?

The number should serve a clear main plot. Choose one primary loop, give every additional element a defined job, and carry forward the characters, resources, and consequences from earlier stages.

Do it with the skill

In Claude Code, say: “Use /story-long-write to compare whether my idea best fits the core loop of cautious cultivation (凡人流), scenario-based survival (无限流), rules horror, system fiction, or rebirth fiction. List the choice, reward, lasting change, and failure risk in each cycle. Do not write the full prose.” In Codex, write $story-long-write.
