Replace the label with a specific problem

Oh Story recommends showing intelligence through reading a situation, adapting, and managing an exchange rather than narrator praise. This scene applies that principle rather than quoting a fixed formula.

Original situation: exhibition coordinator Ye Qing finds two exhibitors arguing over an A08 location sign. Exhibitor A’s older sheet puts A08 at the entrance; B’s newer sheet puts it in the side corridor. The latest complete plan retains A at the entrance, now numbered A03, and places B at side-corridor A08. The venue lead has approved that plan, but the mover received only an old screenshot and the sign still carries an entrance sticker.

Ye first sees the sheets and old sticker. They establish different versions, but she must retrieve the complete plan and check approval and both placements. Her advantage separates numbering from notification without immediately declaring sabotage.

Give her one relevant competence rather than mastery of technology, negotiation, law, and everyone’s private history. Intelligence can include knowing whom to ask instead of possessing every answer alone.

Show the judgment without announcing brilliance

Weak version:

Ye had exceptional emotional intelligence. “You’re all mistaken,” she said, and everyone admired her.

Without evidence, checking, and acceptance, one-line success is supplied by the author.

Revision:

“Don’t move it yet.” Ye aligned the sheets. “This A08 says entrance here and side corridor there. Let’s check the complete plan.”

She retrieved the existing plan and showed its confirmation message to the venue lead. “Is this version in effect?”

“Yes. A remains at entrance A03; B has side-corridor A08.” The lead pointed out both places.

A asked, “The entrance position hasn’t changed?”

“Only its number.”

“I accept that. Change my sign to A03.”

B also accepted the corridor position. The mover opened the old screenshot. “I followed this. I can move it in ten minutes.”

“Use the confirmed plan now. After opening, we’ll check where the notice was missed,” Ye said.

The mover relocates A08 to the corridor and places A03 at the entrance. Both exhibitors check their positions and resume setup. Placement is restored while the notification gap remains for review. A later sheet is not automatically effective, nor has everyone forgiven everything. Witnesses can cooperate without uniform admiration.

Ye hears the actual placement concerns and proposes a checkable method. Her management of the exchange rests on facts and replies.

Allow uncertainty and revision

In an alternative version where the newer sheet is an unapproved draft, Ye can establish differing versions without fixing placement from it. She can ask the lead or discuss provisional preparation, then act after confirmation. The complete example above enacts approval and acceptance; do not mix the two versions’ outcomes.

Others have ordinary interests: an exhibitor wants entrance visibility, a mover fears overtime, and the notifier may protect a work record. Intelligence addresses those interests instead of making everyone obedient.

Check the clue’s origin, the strength of the conclusion and an alternative if verification fails. Different versions do not automatically prove deception. When evidence changes the judgment, let the character acknowledge and revise it rather than silently replacing the old conclusion.

The source’s perfect resolution of embarrassment is a technique default. An author can show correction after an error, intelligence without universal approval, or ordinary successful cooperation. Ground judgment in information and action without adding a twist to every scene.

Repair implausible cleverness

Opponents ignore an obvious solutionLet them try it; give the lead a different condition or better judgment

Remove praise such as brilliant or genius. Can readers still name the observation and useful action? If so, the label has support.

FAQ

Must a clever character foresee everything?

No. Supported judgment, awareness of limits and adaptation are more credible than unexplained omniscience.

Does tact mean never upsetting anyone?

No. They can assign responsibility or refuse. Expression and action should account for the objective, relationship and cost.
