Fix the Reset Rules: Memory Is Not Current State
Urban-premise craft puts a new rule into testable situations; continuity craft tracks actual progress and results; suspense craft arranges questions, hints, and answers. This article applies them to looping. The following is an editorial worksheet rather than a time-loop formula already present in the sources.
| Rule | Original clock-tower example |
|---|---|
| Reset time and scope | If the midnight condition fails, the town returns to 06:00 on the same day |
| Retained state | New clock attendant Gu Yao retains memory; his body returns to morning state |
| Reset state | Tools, papers, clock faults, and everyone else’s memories return to morning |
| Exit condition | A complete twelve-stroke midnight chime permits the next day |
| Source | An old duty log states the phenomenon; the first eleven-stroke reset verifies part of it |
The early log is a setting clue, not proof that Gu has verified everything. Remembering a photograph does not produce that photograph in this round. Remembering a colleague’s agreement does not make the reset colleague remember it.
Four Rounds: Different Strategies, Not Just More Disasters
Established setup: the old cinema closes for relocation that evening; tower maintenance is accessible until 17:00. The log is available in the morning duty room. Gu can adjust the clock, but checking the catch needs the other on-duty attendant familiar with this mechanism, He Xue, who leaves town at 14:00. Remembering the fault does not repair it.
| Round | Record |
|---|---|
| One | Inspection starts at 16:00; the final stroke catches, and Xue has left. Eleven midnight strokes precede a reset to 06:00. |
| Two | Gu prepares earlier but tries alone; he cannot adjust and check the catch simultaneously. It remains unfixed and resets. |
| Three | At noon he asks Xue to trust a check from “yesterday,” without current inspection material. She refuses to operate on unknown findings. By his new check, it is time for her to leave. |
| Four | At 09:00 he photographs the current fault and obtains her on-site check. They use the established method, complete a noon test, and hear twelve actual strokes at midnight. |
The fault and time limits remain constant. Gu changes how he uses memory, obtains present evidence, and requests cooperation. Xue’s refusal has a reason rather than existing only to force failure. Round four needs neither a sudden expert nor a tool carried through resets.
Four rounds are this example’s scale. Another unit may need two, or devote a round to rest, orientation, or emotional experience. Each return needs no new death, loss, or stronger opponent.
Original Scene: Do Not Ask Her to Remember Another Yesterday
In round four Gu does not begin with “I saw this last night.” He brings Xue to the current maintenance station where she can check the problem. The fictional method is already established; the scene concerns cooperation and knowledge rather than real equipment instructions.
“Let’s check the last stroke today.” Gu offered the photograph just taken.
Xue looked at it, then at the catch. “It really is stuck. Didn’t you notice yesterday?”
He nearly said he had noticed three times. She remembered none of those afternoons.
“I’ve noticed this time,” he said. “I adjust; you check this part by the duty method. Is there time?”
“Before lunch. Stop trying to adjust and reach in at once.”
“Okay. When you say stop, I stop.”
That did not tell her about the loop. It told them what each would do today.
They complete the work and a twelve-stroke noon test. Xue records this maintenance and leaves as planned. Gu waits outside the tower at midnight and actually hears twelve strokes. Next morning his phone shows the next date and time passes 06:01 rather than returning to the same 06:00. Those results fulfill this round’s exit; noon was an intermediate test.
Xue remembers round four’s shared work without acquiring earlier rounds. Gu may later tell her, and she still has her own reply. Escape need not cancel her travel or independent goals.
Summarize Repetition and Expand Changed Understanding
Once the rule is established, summarize brushing teeth, the same walk, or an identical broadcast: “He woke at six again. The broadcast used yesterday’s words.” Expand new choices within familiar actions: acting alone in round two, asking someone without the same memory in three, and supplying current material in four.
A repeated line can gain meaning. “Didn’t you notice yesterday?” first sounds like criticism, later reminding him that their memories differ. Rewording dialogue alone does not create progress; repeating a line does not automatically create filler.
Suspense may move from why repetition happens to cooperation and whether midnight actually succeeds. When the answer is fulfilled, the story can close without immediately creating a more dangerous loop.
Repair a Loop by Checking State Across Rounds
For each round record what the lead knows, what has happened now, and what others currently know. If only the lead’s memory persists, screenshots, wounds, and other people’s agreements cannot cross rounds without explanation. If this book retains a category of objects or injuries, establish that rule first and apply it consistently.
An exit can depend on repair, choice, or truth, but must follow the book’s conditions. For a choice-based exit, establish who or what determines completion rather than using “he finally grew” as the rule. An initially unknown condition needs a source, inference, and test later, not a final assertion that love was enough all along.
Check each round’s value: information, a successful attempt, understanding failure, or emotional experience can work. Shorten useless repetition; retain rest and stable company when they serve the book instead of adding disaster to make a table escalate.
FAQ
Must every loop fail or cost more?
No. A round can achieve partial success, understanding, or the present goal. Changed judgment and choices can matter without escalating calamity.
Do it with the skill
Use $story-long-write to review this time loop with reset timing, retained states, current knowledge, exit conditions, and written rounds. Separate old memory, current objects, replies, and results; check rule sources and verification. Expand key scenes and summarize repetition under the author’s voice, without mandatory failure or added cost. Revise only the named scope.
