Record behavior before assigning traits
Out-of-character writing breaks the behavioral logic readers recognize. Start with checkable action rather than claims such as “he is calm, so he can never cry.” Oh Story asks that choices fit established character logic. Fanfiction also requires separating canon from interpretation.
In the invented Mist Harbor example, Qiao refuses to open letters three times but helps locate recipients. This supports protecting privacy and assisting delivery. “He has no feelings” remains an interpretation.
Record the scene, what he knew, what he protected and his method. A source location is enough; do not copy whole chapters. If canon contains conflicting behavior, retain the different conditions instead of declaring one scene his entire personality.
Make changed behavior traceable
| Layer | Example | Revision judgment |
|---|---|---|
| Boundary | Does not open others’ letters | Do not drop it merely to obtain a clue |
| New pressure | Recipient missing; returning erases a memory | Requires another delivery method |
| New information | Recipient left a proxy arrangement | Changes receipt, not necessarily permission to open |
| New strategy | Find the proxy and confirm terms | Advances the story while preserving the boundary |
| Result | Delivery creates a further obligation | Choice leaves a relationship consequence |
If he does cross the boundary, show why old methods fail, how he weighs the decision and who responds. Errors are possible; losing memory or judgment only when the plot needs it is not a convincing explanation.
Repair the decision before the verbal surface
Problem version: Qiao sneers and opens the letter: “Who cares about rules?” The scene discards an established boundary without a changed condition. A familiar catchphrase afterward cannot repair it.
Local revision: he flattens the torn outer envelope and finds a proxy address. A Lan urges him to read the contents; Qiao returns the inner sheet: “Find this person first.” The action preserves his principle and creates a concrete next scene.
If the intended story explores loss of control, do not force a gentle version. Establish the triggering events and current belief, then let the new strategy have consequences. Authorial assurances of hidden affection and imitation of canon dialogue cannot substitute for that chain.
Distinguish deliberate changes from accidental drift
Alternate universes, different ages and changed experiences can reset conditions. Declare which character promise remains and which background changes, so readers can judge the intended version.
Check each scene for earned information, remembered promises, triggers for emotional turns and relationship grounds for changed treatment. Repair the decisive choice, then review affected later scenes instead of replacing all dialogue.
When seeking feedback from canon readers, ask for the specific behavior and source basis. Different interpretations need not be errors. Textual evidence explaining a choice is more useful than claims that every fan would agree.
FAQ
Does character growth inevitably become OOC?
No. Growth follows traceable pressure, choices and results. A character may change methods or boundaries when readers can see how that change occurs.
Do it with the skill
Ask story-long-write to compare supplied canon evidence with the fanfiction scene. Check behavior, knowledge and promises, separate facts from interpretations and propose a local repair.
