Identify sentence jobs before counting
Connect a continuing action with the right sequence, cause or turn. Split when information overload or changed attention makes following difficult. Give a crucial fact its own position rather than the longest paragraph.
Oh Story emphasizes continuity and varied density. Length, punctuation and pause follow the book’s voice. Chinese connectors and English clauses differ; a character-count threshold does not transfer directly.
Compare three rhythms with the same facts
Original facts: Qing He breaks a guitar string during a performance, stops picking and looks to the drummer. The drummer maintains the beat on the rim. She finishes the chorus; the audience applauds. No new accident, helper or result is added.
Equal weight:
The string snapped. Qing stopped picking. She looked at the drummer. He tapped the rim. The beat continued. She sang on. She finished the chorus. The audience applauded.
One breath:
The string snapped and Qing stopped picking and looked at the drummer, who kept the beat on the rim, so she sang through the end of the chorus and then the audience applauded.
Weighted by change:
The string snapped.
Qing stopped picking and looked at the drummer; the rim still carried the beat. She followed it through the end of the chorus, and applause rose from the audience.
The third isolates the break and connects the response. It adds no plot turn: attention changes. An intentionally breathless voice may adapt the second version; length alone does not make it wrong.
A revision sheet with facts fixed
| Place | Job | Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Broken string | New fact | Isolate a beat |
| Stop and look | Continuing response | Connect with clear subject |
| Continuing rhythm | Basis for next move | Link to attention |
| Chorus and applause | Result and reply | Close without another success summary |
This manual sheet does not require four sentences in every passage. Remove repetition or move background before splitting unrelated information. Do not cut a complete inference merely at a word count.
Read aloud for strain and emphasis
Check subjects, links, turns and the fact worth pausing on. Strain may come from too many modifiers or list items; choppiness may come from a single action chain split apart.
Mark existing connections before moving full stops, then check facts. Applause follows the completed chorus; smoothing prose must not move it into the performance. Paragraph structure and repairing overedited fragments have separate guides.
Common misuses
| Misuse | Revision |
|---|---|
| Every sentence has equal weight | Follow changes in information |
| Forced long-short alternation | Follow real action and pause |
| Long sentence is an action list | Connect actual sequence, cause and turn |
| Speed removes pronouns or reasons | Restore needed links, not extra gestures |
| Every short sentence gets a paragraph | Reserve isolation for useful emphasis |
Deliberate recurring rhythm can serve ritual, comedy or intense feeling. Judge its effect rather than flattening it with one standard.
FAQ
Do short sentences automatically create tension?
No. Short sentences can emphasize a new fact or fragment a continuing process. Tension also needs goals, resistance, uncertainty and choice; length controls attention and pause.
Do it with the skill
Use $story-long-write to adjust sentence length and links only. Fix action order and results first, then mark emphasis, turns and continuity. Preserve voice, subjects and causality without new reactions or plot changes.
