Separate Chosen Form From Undrafted Instructions

Abundant dialogue and clear action do not prove a defect. Some writers deliberately choose a script form or restrained narration; evaluate that choice against their goals. This guide concerns an intended prose novel retaining “Scene One,” “close-up,” “camera pulls back” or “create suspense here.”

Oh Story’s scene method treats the outline as requirements for events, not the shape of the prose. Goals, plot points and ending states should not be copied as narration. Camera thinking can guide attention without issuing commands to an imaginary camera inside the novel.

Outline to chapter covers the full planning-to-draft process. This guide diagnoses sentences in an existing draft that remain instructions or lists.

What to Restore During Revision

Draft patternRevision direction
“Close-up: broken clasp”Show how the viewpoint notices it and what the existing discovery changes
“A is angry; B feels guilty”Use accessible feelings under the chosen viewpoint, without unauthorized mind-reading
“Find problem → change mind → leave”Connect established discovery, decision and departure causally
One identical paragraph per plot pointAllocate detail by importance rather than filling planning boxes
“Scene ends; relationship worsens”Deliver the established change without inventing a fight or breakup

A secret, memory or new object cannot fill missing facts merely to make prose feel novelistic. Ask the author to decide missing processes first. Direct emotion and narrator commentary may fit the chosen style; they need not all become physical reactions.

Original Comparison: Trying on an Old Necklace

Established facts: before rehearsal, Song Rui tries an old necklace whose clasp will not close. A Zhe suggests tape; she refuses, removes the necklace and returns it to its box. The chosen viewpoint is limited to Song Rui.

Undrafted version

Location: backstage. Close-up on clasp. Song Rui tries it; it will not close. A Zhe: tape? Song Rui refuses. Camera pulls back as she removes it. Ending state: returned to box.

Prose passage

Song Rui brought the necklace ends together behind her neck, but the clasp would not close.

“Tape?” A Zhe asked.

“No.” She removed the necklace and put it back in its box.

The revision connects trying on and the failed clasp, preserving the suggestion, refusal, removal and return to the box. It adds neither a second attempt nor a new object to manufacture a process.

The passage supplies no thoughts for A Zhe, ownership history or withdrawal from the performance. Possession is clear, and the ending does not restate its planning label. This original scene can be adapted using actions already established in your manuscript.

Routine Transitions Can Remain Summary

The discovery and refusal deserve attention. Arrival backstage and routine preparation can remain concise. Expanding every summary produces a different form of excess. A novel combines narration and scenes; every sentence need not become a storyboard shot.

Diagnose script-like passages in [excerpt]. Distinguish intentional form from leaked scene, camera or planning labels. Revise under [viewpoint and style], preserving [events and information boundaries]. Clarify key changes and summarize routine transitions. List proposed new actions for author approval; do not add unapproved ones. Return the prose and instruction types removed.

This is a manual local revision brief. Reread for who discovers the problem, how they know, what they choose and what results. Check that no unauthorized viewpoint, action or secret explanation has appeared.

FAQ

Must the word “camera” be removed from a novel?

No. Characters may be filming, and a narrator may intentionally use visual metaphors. Repair unwanted production instructions and missing processes, rather than banning a word.

Do it with the skill

Use /story-long-write, or $story-long-write in Codex, for local revision with viewpoint and explicit permission to develop events. The writing-craft scene method supplies the approach under the book’s style. This is not a dedicated screenplay-to-novel mode.
